One year and several hundred films later, I confess my mind isn't over-full of vivid memories of director Peter Jackson's first "Hobbit."

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is three hours long, has no beginning and no ending, but a few memorable action sequences and a thing called Smaug keep the middle act of Peter Jackson's forced trilogy fast-paced and entertaining.

There’s a terrific action sequence in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” that involves a river, some barrels, and a lot of orcs and elves. It’s visually coherent and exciting, it was shot smoothly, and it’s just a pantload of fun.

It's now perfectly clear what director/co-writer Peter Jackson and his screenwriting team of Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro are doing with J.R.R. Tolkien's work. This is not just an adaptation of The Hobbit, the beloved—even by...

Peter Jackson has gone down a bad road. As much as I've loved most of his work, the filmmaker's adaptation of The Hobbit is not working out. When he made The Lord of the Rings, he adapted three books into three movies. It was a great idea.

When we last saw Bilbo Baggins (Freeman) and his dwarf friends they were winding their way through the Misty Mountains on a quest. A quest for treasure, honor and redemption. And the only thing standing in their way was….a dragon!

Going into the roughly 153-minute “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” my questions were, “Is it painfully slow like ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’?“ and “Wasn’t Smaug already, uh, desolate?” I mean, Smaug sounds like a mountain, and I’m sure...

It turns out The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a pretty terrible name for Peter Jackson's latest trek into the world and works of J.R.R. Tolkien. While the book on which it's based is centered on the story of the titular hobbit Bilbo Baggins...

Even rote fantasy blockbusters can — and usually do — feature the showdown of good and evil. To conjure true darkness, however, is a trickier feat. Early on in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), having proved...

Special effects have always played an important role in Peter Jackson's adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's books but, with The Desolation of Smaug, the middle chapter of The Hobbit movie trilogy, they take center stage.

For those who felt that the first verse of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy was a meandering slog, the good news is that his second proceeds at a gallop right from the get-go.

The first Hobbit movie wasn’t often in a rush. In fact, An Unexpected Journey was, on occasion, leisurely to the point of inertia, as Bilbo and his new Dwarf chums took what felt like an age to leave the Shire, and subsequently had little problem...

Full disclosure up front: this critic detests the works of J. R. R. Tolkien having slogged through The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and found the The Lord of the Rings movies to be excruciating to watch. The notion of watching the extended...

It’s a generally accepted rule that stories require a beginning, a middle and an end (even if Jean-Luc Godard felt that they didn’t necessarily have to be in that order). But do those rules apply if you’re stretching a single story over three epic films?
