Cuando India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska), una adolescente, pierde a su padre (Dermot Mulroney) en un trágico accidente de coche el día en que cumple 18 años, su vida se hace añicos. Su impasible comportamiento oculta profundos sentimientos que sólo su padre comprendía. Cuando Charlie (Matthew Goode), el hermano de su padre, aparece por sorpresa en el funeral, decide hacerse cargo de ella y de su inestable madre (Nicole Kidman).
