Valoraciones de Phantom

The cinematic offenses committed by the filmmakers of “Phantom” are varied and many. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have Russian characters speak without a Russian accent has some fundamental lessons to learn about filmic storytelling.

PHANTOM does have the advantage of an interesting story based on an incident in the 1960s where a Soviet sub disappeared. What we see on screen is speculation possibly bordering on complete fabrication, but it’s an engaging premise nonetheless.

Todd Robinson’s “Phantom’’ gives us a couple of things we haven’t seen in a while: the great Ed Harris and a Cold War submarine thriller. It’s not something you want to plunk down $12 for, but just diverting enough to check out when it arrives...

The coda of Phantom informs us that the incident of the disappearance of a Soviet submarine with nuclear launch capabilities in 1968 portrayed beforehand is still considered classified by both the United States and Russian governments.

With a title like Phantom, one might easily assume that this movie is a ghost story. In actuality, however, it's a submarine thriller loosely based on actual events from 1968. The tale told by Phantom falls into the realm of "historical fiction."

PHANTOM seems like an odd candidate for a wide theatrical release. A relatively low-budget thriller, it’s the kind of movie that would have probably played really well as an HBO telefilm back in the nineties (before they changed their focus...

Phantom is a third-rate submarine drama until, in its final moments, it sinks to fourth-rate. Writer-director Todd Robinson's film claims it's inspired by true events, but as a textual coda makes clear, what that actually means is that only the...

This is one claustrophobic movie.

In writer-director Todd Robinson’s waterlogged thriller of Cold War brinksmanship, self-described as an even closer call than the Cuban missile crisis, Ed Harris plays a Russian submarine captain with an unexpected chance to save the world.

Run Silent, Run Deep had Gable versus Lancaster. The Hunt for Red October had Connery versus Baldwin. Crimson Tide had Hackman versus Washington. There's a long history of two high-caliber actors going against one another in submarine movies.

In sports and the military, "professionalism" describes people who go about their work with a calm, dispassionate efficiency -- no fuss, no panic when things go wrong, few mistakes, little attention paid to the odds, the chance for glory.

On March 8, 1968, about 1,800 miles northwest of Oahu in the Pacific Ocean, the diesel-powered Soviet submarine K-129 exceeded its crush depth and imploded, for mysterious reasons a screenwriter would find intriguing on which to speculate. All 98 of...

It’s not easy to cinematically torpedo a submarine thriller. Because of the inherent claustrophobia, an aura of suspense is not difficult to evoke. But filmmaker Todd Robinson (“White Squall,” “Lonely Hearts”) manages to sabotage all diabolical...
